New Book! Pendragon 2: The Lost City of Faar
Press and Pendragon travel through the Flume to a water-covered territory called Cloral where they use water-powered water sleds to get around. They use face-molding bubbles to breathe underwater. Press and Bobby make it past the Shark-Quigs to get picked up by the unbeknownst to himself traveler Spader. They race vehicles called Skimmers back to the floating "Habitat" called Granillion which is in charge of producing food for Cloral. They drink Sniggers (Reverse Moxie (The best soda in the world)) and get to meet each other in a bar. Bobby and Press get jobs on Granillion, and start to get to know the territory of Cloral. Later on tradgedy strikes as a different territory collides with Granillion because all of the people on it are dead. Press, Spader, and Bobby are attacked by Saint DAne, but escape back to Granillion. Spader's father was killed on the other Habitat, and Spader changes personality dramatically as he prepares to avenge his father.

Bobby saves his uncle from the Quig via a dog whistle given to him by Mark and Courtney. The travelers all escape through the Quig pen, and upon arriving back at the Milago camp, they find out that the Milago have discovered a mineral that is highly explosive. Unfortunately the batteries brought onto Denduron by Bobby provided the perfect trigger for a massive bomb the Milago are planning to use to annihilate the Bedoowan. This is the actual turning point of Denduron, and the travelers must stop the Milago from committing genocide of the Bedoowan, because then the Milago would use their new found mineral (Tak) as a weapon against the rest of Denduron causing global chaos. Fortunately, Bobby comes up with a plan to stop the crazed Milago by using a combination of Quig-and-uncle-Press-power and the element of surprise to spear the arm of the kamikaze mission leader against the bomb, and they disarm it by washing it away. Meanwhile, the second wave of the Milago attack is beginning, as Milago tribesmen attack with Tak-filled slingshots. Bobby and Loor follow Figgis (Merchant discoverer of Tak) to the Tak mine to find out he is actually Saint Dane. Bobby gets attacked by a shark Quig sent by Saint Dane as he was fleeing the Tak mine, which Bobby lit the fuse to exploding. Loor get knocked out, and Bobby safely gets them both thrown off of a cliff into the ocean. The Bedoowan castle blows up, the two tribes strike up a fair allegiance, and Bobby and Press head out to the next mission set on the water-covered territory of Cloral.

Bobby met Mark and Courtney with an assortment of Second Earth items, including a boom box, flashlight, and walkie talkie. Bobby takes these back to Denduron, scares some people with them, finds a secret underground entrance to the Bedoowan fortress, he, Loor, and Alder sneak through the halls of the elegant and advanced Bedoowan castle populated with the chubby Bedoowans and their servant tribe. They try to rescue Press, but get captured and put into a pit to fight against an angry Quig beast.

As we left Bobby Pendragon, he was passed out on a sled in a three-sunned medieval territory called Denduron. Soon he found himself in a cottage with a traveler, Osa and her haughty, disapproving daughter, Loor. After learning he had to write journals and send them to his down-to-earth friend, Mark. He then went to bathe in a nearby river, and tackled Loor into the river after seeing a soldier from the nearby evil Bedoowan tribe. They went downstream, Bobby learned that Loor couldn't swim, and Bobby navigated both of them to safety. The soldier turned out to be a friendly traveler named Alder. Bobby starts planning his escape from Denduron, and is lead down to the mines where the lowly Milago tribe is forced to work inhumane conditions for the valuable mineral, glaze. He also learns that if the Milago do not mine enough glaze, Saint Dane, disguised as a general from the Bedoowan tribe, kills one of the Milago in a ceremonial glaze transfer. Meanwhile, back on Second Earth, Mark tells Bobby's crush, Courtney about the situation, and she eventually believes him as they discover a message saying for them to meet Bobby at the subway flume with specific objects, required to rescue his Uncle Press from the clutches of the evil Bedoowan.

Recently, I spent two weeks doing my best to forget everything that had any remote relation to school, and as a result, I got a bit behind with my summaries. Since my last post, I have read several books, continuing on with both the Pendragon Series, and exploring other books. I will post a brief summary of the other pendragon stories at another time, and perhaps revisit them when I am not bogged down with the weight of six different books...

Pendragon: Merchant of Death #4

Bobby heads down the subway tunnel to find groups of vicious dogs waiting for him. He outruns the dogs, and enters through a mysterious doorway. Bobby then yells "Denduron" and floats down a corridor to be rudely deposited in a cave. As Bobby exits the cave, he finds that wherever he is, there are three suns and that he is far up in the mountains. Press comes through the cave, and they both get redressed in heavy furs and skins. They also have an old fashioned sled outfitted with two spears. They leave the cave on the sled, and are chased by "Quigs" which are guardians of the gates that are specific to each territory. These ones are huge furry monsters with spikes on their backs. They outrun the quigs, but crash the sled in a nearby forest, Press is taken hostage, and Bobby passes out.

Pendragon: The Merchant of Death #3

Meanwhile, Press and Bobby are headed towards New York City. They take a few turns, and end up in a "the bad part of town" Bobby is hugely surprised to find that Press leaves a very obvious very expensive very vulnerable-to-being-stolen motorcycle just sitting there on the sidewalk as they head down into a subway station. Bobby and his uncle go down into the subway station, to meet a homeless man and a cop. The cop turns out to be a man named Saint Dane who hypnotizes the homeless man to run in front of an oncoming subway car. Saint Dane and Press have a gunfight, and Bobby runs down the subway tracks looking for a "gate" with only the word "Denduron" to guide him.

Bobby's story is being read by his best friend, Mark, a nerdy unpopular kid who eats too many carrots and finds peace in the upstairs boys bathroom.  Mark was met by a strange woman who gave him a mysterious ring through which Bobby's "journals" have been appearing.

After a short pause, I'm back to summarizing my readings. I have started the Pendragon series. The first book is called "The Merchant of Death" So far, the main character has been introduced as Bobby Pendragon, a successful, popular fourteen year old boy who, right before the semi-finals of his basketball league, kisses his crush, and then is rudely interrupted by his uncle, Press.

Brisingr Summary #7

Eragon and Saphira fly from Du Weldenvarden to the city of Feinster to aid the Varden in recapturing the city from Galbatorix's forces. They first help by opening the city gates with aid from Brisingr. After fighting for a little bit, Arya, Eragon, and Saphira head up to the top teir of the city only to discover that the overwhelmed spell casters defending Feinster have made the decision to attempt to create another shade. In the first book Eragon kills a shade named Durza, and he was only the third to do it, with aid from Arya and Saphira. Despite their efforts to thwart them, the spellcasters create the shade, whom Arya kills, aided by Eragon. Meanwhile, Glaedr and Oromis fight Murtagh and Thorn above Gil' Ead. Oromis has a seizure in the air, and as a result, is killed, and Glaedr rampages Thorn, bites off the tip of his tail, an is killed. This concludes Brisingr, and another final novel will follow

Brisingr Summary #6

Eragon completes his sword, which he names Brisingr and discovers that whenever he utters his sword's name, it bursts into fire. After this, he flys back to Oromis and Glaedr to discover that they are both flying to battle in Gil' Ead. Glaedr bestows upon Eragon, his heart of hearts (the being of a dragon, and the source of all of Galbatorix's power) so that they can always communicate. After this, they part ways at the border of Du Weldenvarden, each to battle.

Brisingr Summary #5

Eragon decides he will be spending the night at Du Weldenvarden, even though he is long overdue to return to the Varden. He also learns about the source of Galbatorix's power, the hearts of deceased dragons that still emit energy. After this immense discovery, Eragon and Saphira fly to a large tree called the Menoa Tree to look for a weapon, that is said to be hidden there. Discovering nothing, Eragon then heads to an Elven household to discover the old dragon rider's sword there does not work with his fighting style, so he goes to an old smith who tells him to look for a certain type of metal from a shooting star. Convinced that the metal is hidden under the Menoa Tree, he and Saphira provoke the tree into giving it to them. After they return to the smith with the metal, they work all night and forge Eragon a new sword.

Brisingr Summary #4

In this summary, I will first tell of what Eragon's brother Roran did, then Eragon's dragon, Saphira, and then Eragon himself. Roran accompanies a raid on a village captured by the empire, and after the boneheaded general he is under the command of almost gets them killed, Roran takes control of matters. Roran uses superior tactical skill, bravery, and leadership to defy his captain, beat the enemy, and slay nearly two hundred soldiers himself. This act of insubordination gets Roran literally tied to the whipping post in the end, taking fifty lashes, only so he could stay in the Varden. Directly after his flaying, Roran leads a force of half Urgals, and half men to do a small raid with purposes to unite the two races further. This is successful, until Roran provokes one of the Rams (term for a male Urgal) into a duel for dominance over the tribe. Roran wins, and all is settled. In the meantime, Saphira is getting bored around the Varden, with only a fake apparition of Eragon, cast to mislead possible spies as to Eragon's absence, to keep her company. She eventually hears of Eragon's attempted assassination, and flies for three days and nights straight to reach him. All the while, Eragon vows to avenge the murderers of his guard, and with the combined forces of Orik, they banish the clan responsible. Orik is elected king, and is crowned by a strange being, summoned in the ancient language, apparently a dwarven god. After the coronation, Eragon and Saphira fly directly to Du Weldenvarden (the realm of the elves) to seek guidance from Boromis, Eragon's master, on how to defeat Galbatorix. Instead, Eragon learns of his genealogy, discovering his actual father was not the evil Morzan, but his ex-guide, Brom. Even though brom is now dead, this knowledge helped Eragon understand himself better.

Eragon arrives at the dwarven city of Farthen Dur, to discover that his Dwarf foster brother, Orik, has been replaced as clan leader since the demise of the previous one. This placing Orik in the running for the king of Farthen Dur, Eragon is flung into a world of politics as he agrees to back Orik as long as he keeps a wise head about when to back out, and to use Eragon's backing to nominate a Varden-friendly king. After one incredibly boring political discussion, Eragon wanders into a deadly assassination trap set for him. Eragon barely escapes the trap, discovering the identity of his assailants, and raising suspicions about which clan may have ordered the attack.

After dark, Eragon sneaks out of the Varden's campground very stealthily, and runs until he rendezvous with his companion for the trip to Farthen Dur, the leader of the formidable race of Kull. They run together for two days and nights straight (Eragon is part elf, and Kull have the stamina of a bear combined with a Canadian hockey player.) After this, the Kull leaves Eragon, and Eragon completes the last leg of the journey to Farthen Dur.

Brisingr Summary #1

Brisingr starts out with Eragon and his newly reunited cousin Roran seiging Helgrind, the home of the elusive Ra'zac. After their seige, Roran leaves with Eragon's dragon, Saphira on his way back to the rebel movement against the Empire, The Varden. Once Eragon rendevous with Roran and Saphira, the Empire attack with an army of soldiers that can't feel pain accompanied by Eragon's evil brother, Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. Once Eragon drives Thorn and Murtagh off, Roran marries his beloved Katrina, and Eragon sets off to the dwarf city of Farthen Dur to oversee the election of the new Dwarf king.

This strange title to this post is the name of a book I am currently reading. Brisingr is the third installment in the Inheritance series by Christopher Paolini, a high school student who was homeschooled for most of his life, more information about Christopher Paolini can be found here
